Watch City Steampunk Festival

Final de semana bem divertido no festival Steampunk, em Walthan (MA), cidade conhecida também pela denominação “Watch City” devido à instalação da companhia Waltham Watch Factory em 1854, que trouxe a primeira máquina para fazer relógios. Esse apelido da cidade tem tudo a ver com o Festival e por isso o nome “Watch City Steampunk Festival”!

Eu simplesmente adorei e a curiosidade me levou a ler um pouco mais sobre essa “tribo urbana”, que traz um movimento estético retrofuturista para os cenários das cidades. Essa tendência surgiu de livros de ficção científica e se espalhou pelo cinema, moda e música. E hoje, se dissemina pelos centros urbanos como performances e produtos - comportamentos, atitudes, roupas, linguagens, acessórios, games, quadrinhos, músicas, filmes, como “A invenção de Hugo Cabret”, “Desventuras em Série”, “Sherlock Holmes”, “Liga Extraordinária”, entre outros.

Uma das justificativas para o termo steam (vapor) é que as máquinas a vapor revolucionaram as formas de produção e o transporte do século XIX, sendo também um período de descobertas científicas e medicinais. Na década de 1970 e 1980 do século XX, os steamers (adeptos) se apropriaram dessa ideia e agregaram uma visão futurista para o passado histórico, criando uma reinvenção do passado; uma versão paralela de um mundo fantasioso, com ambientação vitoriana e presença do sobrenatural e da magia interferindo nas criações humanas.

No festival esses elementos estavam presentes, pessoas de todas as idades com vestimentas que misturavam épocas; barracas com invenções estranhas de material reciclado; músicas, danças e acrobacias; fadas, gnomos, feitiçarias; uma miscelânea de coisas, pessoas, ambientes e ideias sendo expostas e vendidas. Ao mesmo tempo em que os steamers trazem uma visão provocadora quanto à relação ser humano-tecnologia e reciclam as ideias, recuperando elementos antigos e transformando-os para uma nova utilização, o mercado constrói seu lucro e mais tecnologias para serem consumidas, baseado nesse movimento. Esse é o mundo inventado por nós!

A very enjoyable weekend at the Steampunk festival in Walthan (MA), a city also known by the name "Watch City" due to the installation of the Waltham Watch Factory in 1854, which brought the first watchmaker. This nickname is very appropriate and therefore the festival's name is "Watch City Steampunk Festival".

I simply loved it and my curiosity led me to read a little more about this "urban tribe", which brings a retro-futuristic aesthetic movement to the city scenarios. This trend came from science fiction books and spread through film, fashion, and music. And today, it spreads through urban centers as performances and products - behaviors, attitudes, clothes, languages, accessories, games, comics, music, films such as "Hugo Cabret's Invention", "Misadventures in Series", "Sherlock Holmes", "Extraordinary League", among others.

One of the justifications for the term steam is that steam engines have revolutionized the forms of production and transportation of the nineteenth century, and it is also a period of scientific and medicinal discoveries. In the 1970s and 1980s, steamers appropriated this idea and added a futuristic vision to the historical past, creating a reinvention of the past; a parallel version of a fantasy world with a Victorian setting and the presence of the supernatural and magic interfering in human creations.

At the festival these elements were present, people of all ages in garments that mixed times; stalls with strange inventions of recycled material; songs, dances, and acrobatics; fairies, gnomes, witchcraft; a miscellany of things, people, environments and ideas being exposed and sold. While steamers bring a provocative view of the human-tech relationship and recycle ideas, reclaiming old elements and turning them into new use, the market builds its profit and more technologies to be consumed, based on that movement. This is the world invented by us!
