Tem horas que você abre a geladeira e não tem nada para o almoço? Para mim hoje foi um desses dias. Então, peguei a bolsa e fui para o Haymarket Boston, uma feira nos arredores do Faneuil Hall. Essa é uma região que desde 1830 serve de comércio, primeiro os fazendeiros vendiam feno para alimentar cavalos e encher colchões (por isso seu nome Hay market), passando depois para o comércio de produtos agrícolas como frutas, verduras, flores.
Mesmo sendo longe de onde estou morando, vale a pena ir até lá por alguns motivos: grande variedade de produtos frescos; preços acessíveis; mercado público está ao lado; região linda e histórica, com diversos pubs, mercados e lojas de comida
Ainda se quiser dá para dar uma esticada e ir até Little Italy (North End), ali perto, onde tem muitos mercadinhos com produtos italianos. Cada dia que vou lá encontro um ... Hoje encontrei o Polcari's Coffee, um lugar maravilhoso! Comprei um café moído na hora (dentre uma diversidade enorme de grãos de diferentes partes do mundo), farinha de amêndoa, damasco... A loja é familiar e está nesse local desde 1932 (105 Salem St.). Me lembrou muito os armazéns da minha infância, o cheiro de sacaria, com café e sementes. Os grandes potes nas prateleiras de madeira, o balcão com a balança bem antiga funcionando, os atendentes super atenciosos. AMEI.

Are there hours you open the refrigerator and have nothing to do for lunch? For me today was one of these days. So I took the bag and went to Haymarket Boston, a fair on the outskirts of Faneuil Hall. This is a region that has been trading since 1830, when farmers sold hay to feed horses and fill up mattresses (hence their name Hay market), and then went on to trade agricultural products such as fruits, vegetables and flowers.
Even though it's far from where I'm living, it's worth going there for a few reasons: a great variety of fresh produce; affordable prices; public market is next door; beautiful and historic area with several pubs, markets and food shops.
Even if you want to take a stretch and go to Little Italy (North End), nearby, where there are many markets with Italian products. Every day I go there I find one ... Today I found Polcari's Coffee, a wonderful place! I bought freshly ground coffee (among a huge diversity of grains from different parts of the world), almond flour, apricot ... The store is a family owned business and has been in this location since 1932 (105 Salem St.). It reminded me a lot of the storerooms of my childhood, the smell of it, with coffee and seeds. The large pots on the wooden shelves, the counter with the old scales running, the attendants super attentive. I LOVED IT!
